Barramundi & File Snake by Enoch Nayilibidj
Barramundi & File Snake by Enoch Nayilibidj
This painting depicts Namarnkol (barramundi) and Nawarndak (file snake). Namarnkol (barramundi), is one of the main food sources for the locals all year around. It is also one of the totem animals for many indigenous, as well as Dreaming in many sites. Namarnkol is even told in stories to be kept as pets of the Yawk Yawk spirits. Traditionally, Bininj used to spear them at billabongs, rivers and floodwaters. Today the locals go fishing with lines and modern nets, yet sometimes with spears, and they know the best fishing spots all around Kakadu. Barramundi is for many the best tucker around!
Being a traditional Bininj (Indigenous) artist, Enoch Nayilibidj has spent many years painting at Injalak Arts and Crafts in Gunbalanya/Oenpelli and he also enjoys coming to Jabiru and painting in his unique style telling stories of creation, depicting bush tucker/animals and sometimes dreamtime stories “Djang”. Bininj refer to ‘Djang’ or sacred places that are off limits for visitors and even Bininj people need permission to be there.
