Barramundi by Abel Naborlhborlh
Abel is a highly regarded painter around Kakadu and Oenpelli. He has helped with several different projects to get his local art recognized around Australia and around the world. He was taught how to paint by his uncle a renowned artist by the name of Joshua Bangarr. He often can be seen painting various different images including yawk-yawks (mermaids), ginga (crocodiles) and his family dreaming, the Kakadu plum.
Namarnkol (barramundi), is one of the main food sources for the locals all year around. It is also one of the totem animals for many indigenous, as well as Dreaming in many sites. Namarnkol is even told in stories to be kept as pets of the Yawk Yawk spirits. Traditionally, Bininj used to spear them at billabongs, rivers and floodwaters. Today the locals go fishing with lines and modern nets, yet sometimes with spears, and they know the best fishing spots all around Kakadu. Barramundi is for many the best tucker around!
